Instruction

At Work in Progress Art Studio creativity knows no bounds. We know that our members and visitors come to us with a variety of experience and with their own individual requirements to expressing themselves through art. To better facilitate that for ALL of our guests and artists, we offer the following classes for more formal instruction as well as monthly and seasonal workshops designed to be fun for ALL levels. Our classes and workshop availability changes regularly, so keep checking back.

Cancellation Policy:
Due to limited seating for all of our classes, we request that you cancel at least 48 hours before a scheduled class. This gives us the opportunity to fill the class. You may cancel by email at teresa@workinprogress.me. Cancellations made 7 days or more in advance of the event date, will receive a 100% refund. Cancellations made within 3 – 6 days will incur a 20% fee. Cancellations made within 48 hours to the event will incur a 30% fee. Cancellations made less than 48 will not receive a refund. The owner has the only right to be flexible here.

Classes

At Work In Progress, a class is a series of lessons taught in a group format. Each class is designed to cater students’ current level of knowledge or experience. Class sessions run 4 weeks for beginner level and 8 weeks for intermediate and above.

Introduction to Pottery

Age Range: 18+
Class Duration: 4-weeks
Offered: Saturdays
Price: $100

Unleash your inner artist with our Introduction to Pottery class. This 4-week course is perfect for beginners and covers all the fundamentals of pottery, including pinch, coil, slab, and wheel forming methods.

Each week you’ll work on a new project and spend 2 hours learning and creating. Join us and discover the joy of working with clay.

Includes up to 4 finished pieces – Additional pieces will be subject to firing fees


Intermediate Pottery

Age Range: 18+
Class Duration: 8-weeks
Offered: Tues / Thurs / Sat
Price: $250

Our intermediate pottery classes are perfect for beginners and more experienced students. We request that you take the Introduction to Pottery class first.

You’re encouraged to bring your ideas and a desire to learn and explore. Whether it’s hand building or wheel throwing, this class offers a supportive environment to develop your pottery skills.

The class is designed to be repeated to build proficiency and a passion for pottery.

Includes 3 hours of practice and instruction weekly and 25 lbs of clay. Glazing and firing are subject to separate fees. Additional clay can be purchased as needed.


Try the Wheel

Age Range: 16+
Class Duration: 2 hours
Price: $50

Curious about the pottery Wheel? This session is perfect for those who are curious about pottery and want to try their hand at the pottery wheel.

Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process, making it a fun and relaxing experience. You’ll even get to take home 2 finished pieces* as a souvenir of your time with us.

Teen Night (on the Wheel)

Age Range: 15 – 18
Class Duration: 2 hours
Price: $50*

These sessions are for teens aged 15 to 18.  We invite you to come in, learn and get practice with wheel throwing.  You’ll have access to clay and one of our wheels as well as instruction from our experienced instructor.  These sessions use reclaimed clay and are intended for practice only.  You are encouraged to learn and practice throwing and then work with the instructor to evaluate your progress and skill progression.  When you’re ready, come join us as a member so you can come throw any time and then fire your work!

Community Builders

B.Y.O.P (Bring Your Own Project)

Age Range: 18+
Class Duration: 3 hours
Price: $10 (free for members!)

Bring Your Own Project and get ready to unleash your inner artist. In an effort to build our artistic community, we invite you to bring any current creative project and mingle with other artistic people in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere.

We’ll provide some snacks and space while you work on your own project for a couple of hours. Our BYOP sessions are perfect for anyone looking to be creative, relax, meet new people and have a good time. Come join us and let your creativity flow.

This event is free for Work In Progress members and current students.


Workshops

At Work in Progress, our workshops are fun, hands-on experiences designed to help you explore new pottery skills in a supportive and creative environment. Each workshop focuses on a unique theme, giving participants the opportunity to learn, create, and connect in a single session. Whether you’re touching clay for the first time or have years of experience, all skill levels are welcome.


Soap Dishes

Age Range: 18+

Every home needs a soap dish, and usually more than one!  Here’s a great opportunity to learn to make them yourself and come back and make more for gifts.

In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll be creating with slabs. No prior experience needed! Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to complete your dish and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

After the workshop, we will bisque fire your pieces and glaze them in one color of your choice. Want to get more creative with glazing? Come back to the studio after your piece is bisque fired and paint your project with our underglazes and a clear glaze to finish it for an additional $20, and we will glaze fire it after that.


Soap Dispensers

Come create your own soap dispenser.  Learn to make hand-built bottles in this beginner-friendly class.  Your bottle can take on your own styling as you learn more about hand-building.

This is a 3-hour class where you will learn the basics of hand-building, including darting and other ways to manipulate form. No prior experience needed! Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Toad Houses

Age Range: 18+

Join us and make your own toad or fairy house for the garden or yard. These are fun to make and your only limitation is your creativity!

In this 3-hour session, you’ll be guided step-by-step by one of our studio instructors to create your own unique toad house for your flowerbeds. No prior pottery experience needed! You’ll learn various hand building techniques as you craft your pieces, and come away with some new skills!

After the workshop, we will bisque fire your pieces and glaze them in one color of your choice. Want to get more creative with glazing? Tree Spirits

Age Range: 18+

Join us as we endeavor to create our own tree spirits.  This beginner-friendly class will start with a basic face sculpture and then you’ll create leaves and other natural elements that you can use to embellish the face and make it your own unique creation!

This is a 3-hour hand-building class where you will learn the basics of sculpting clay into faces and embellishing with sprigs and other elements! No prior experience needed! Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Pinchpot Monsters

Age Range: 8+

Join us as we dive into some very simple sculpting.  You’ll create your own monster companion in this beginner friendly hand-building class!

This is a 2-hour beginners hand-building class where you will learn the basics of sculpting up to 1.5 pounds of clay into the likeness of your monster! No prior experience needed! Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Pinchpot Jack O’Lanterns

Join us as we dive into some very simple sculpting.  You’ll create your own Halloween Jack O’Lantern  in this beginner friendly hand-building class!

Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Come prepare for your holidays by making your own ceramic Christmas trees.  You’ll create your own, unique sculpted holiday tree in this beginner friendly hand-building class!

Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Join us as we dive into some very simple sculpting.  You’ll create your own holiday snow-person  in this beginner friendly hand-building class!

This is a 3-hour beginners hand-building class where you will learn the basics of sculpting up to 1.5 pounds of clay into the likeness of your snowman! No prior experience needed! Your instructor will guide you through the techniques needed to bring your piece to life, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Wheel of the Year – Single Workshops

The Wheel of the Year is an annual, cyclical calendar marking eight seasonal festivals observed by Pagans, Wiccans, and nature-based spiritual practitioners. It combines four solar events (solstices/equinoxes) with four seasonal, earth-based festivals, honoring the shifting seasons, agricultural cycles, and the connection between humanity and nature. The workshops here are available for single purchase. Ostara is a festival of balance, renewal, and new beginnings and the simple act of watering takes on symbolic meaning. Watering cans become quiet tools of intention, representing nourishment, care, and the gentle encouragement of life as it awakens from winter’s rest.

This is a 3-hour hand-building session that is a part of our Wheel of the Year series.  You will learn the basics of hand-building and sgraffito while you create your own watering can to celebrate the season. No prior experience needed – your instructor will guide you through the techniques, and will be around to answer questions and offer tips and tricks.

Beltane is a festival of fire, vitality, and joyful expression. Whistles can symbolize the act of calling energy into motion. Their sharp, playful sound cuts through the air like a spark, awakening attention and inviting celebration, much as Beltane marks the rising power of life and passion in the natural world.

This is a 3-hour hand-building session that is a part of our Wheel of the Year series.  You will learn the basics of hand-building and whistle making in celebration of the season. Litha is the celebration of the summer solstice and the sun at its peak. Honey jars can symbolize abundance, sweetness, and the reward of sustained light and labor. Honey, born from flowers ripened under long summer days, reflects the richness and vitality of the season, capturing sunlight in a golden, enduring form.

A sculpture gives form to these subtle energies, encouraging reflection, protection, and intention-setting during a season focused on preparation and renewal.

Join us for this transformative 8-class series where we celebrate the energy and symbolism the Wheel of the Year through hand-building clay projects. Each session will focus on a different holiday with projects designed to honor the themes, animals, and elements of each season on the Wheel of the Year. Enjoy seasonal teas and a relaxed and nurturing atmosphere as you explore your creative side.

To fully experience and connect with the seasonal energies, we recommend participating in the full, transformational series.  Sessions can be paid as single installment or in 2 equal payments to cover the entire series.  If you’d prefer to participate in single workshops, they are available as single purchases as well – Take a look in the workshops listed above for single sessions.  We encourage you to purchase the full series to save.


Private Instruction

Perfect for reunions, get-togethers, or any other occasion you can dream up, our private lessons and parties are tailored to your group’s preferences. Learn hand building or the wheel, and let our instructors guide you through the process at a pace that suits you. Book now for an unforgettable experience!

Private lessons typically run 2 hours in duration and focus on using the pottery wheel OR building by hand. Participants will usually make 1-2 pieces, depending on the project. Pieces will be glazed by staff and will be available for pickup 2-3 weeks after the event.

Sessions with only 1 participant are $50/person.  Groups of 2 to 5 people are $45/person.  Any additional pieces will be charged an additional $5/piece.

Private Lessons must be booked at least 7 days in advance.  A non-refundable 30% deposit must be paid at the time of booking. Contact the instructor for booking information and to schedule.
