Workshop – Raku Firing

Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique known for its dramatic and unpredictable results. In this process, pottery is rapidly heated in a kiln to around 1,800°F (980°C) and then removed while still glowing hot. The hot pieces are placed into containers with combustible materials like sawdust or paper, which ignite and create a reduction atmosphere. This causes unique surface effects, including crackled glazes, smoky patterns, and metallic sheens. Raku firing emphasizes spontaneity and the beauty of natural imperfections, making each piece truly one of a kind.

We invite our members and current students to join in our Raku firing session.  The cost is $25 and you must register in advance.  Any pieces to be Raku fired must be bisqued before the date of the Raku event.
